About Us

Thonga Beach Lodge is set on the pristine shores of the Maputaland East Coast, KwaZulu-Natal in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. It is a 5hr 30 min drive from King Shaka Airport Durban.

Thonga Beach Lodge is everything a seaside lodge should be – think thatched roofs, glass doors, ocean-blue furniture, dreamy mosquito nets and King-size beds dressed in crisp linen, surrounded by the sounds of the sea. It is the ideal place to discover one of Africa’s last unspoilt wilderness beaches in secluded luxury. Situated as close as it gets to the beach in Mabibi, Northern KwaZulu-Natal, Thonga Beach Lodge is the ideal escape from everyday worries. Here barefoot luxury literally means walking freely between the beach, coastal dune forest and gourmet meals serving the freshest of local ingredients combined in creative ways. The only stress you will experience is choosing amongst the many exciting activities on offer at Thonga – including snorkelling, deep sea diving, open ocean whale- and dolphin-viewing excursions, sunset cruises at Lake Sibaya, bird watching and guided forest walks, turtle tracking and being pampered at the local spa. Situated within an indigenous dune forest in the pristine iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the warm climate of the Maputaland Coast means that even in mid-winter one can feel like one is cheating the seasons in this warm ocean haven.

Island style architecture, using organic materials, is perfectly blended with every modern convenience. Each luxury thatched hut has its own wooden deck, indigenous forest or sea views through wrap-around windows and double glass doors. Behind the bed is a double basin with large mirrors and next to that a spacious bath or shower depending on room type. The toilet is enclosed separately.

The food at Thonga Beach Lodge has received international acclaim, and the chef prides himself on finding the very best of local, seasonal produce. Sustainable fish, an array of healthy and delicious salads and vegetables, not to mention decadent teas and desserts are served in dappled shade on an open deck with ocean breeze.

The sounds of the sea call to one’s soul from every part of the lodge. The suites are connected with a wooden promenade, which leads to the spa, a beautiful thatched lounge with wifi and an open bar area where an array of interesting beach cocktails are served by enthusiastic local staff. Or you may wish to enjoy your favourite drink at the swimming pool on an upholstered, cushioned lounger or on a deck overlooking the sea, with views to open the heart.

1. The Golden Beach of Mabibi

The unspoilt golden beach of Mabibi is one of the cleanest, most beautiful beaches in the world, as it stretches forever to the North and South within the protection of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

2. Snorkelling

The snorkelling right at the lodge and by boat to nearby safe coral atolls reveals a world of diverse oceanic life, including dolphins and turtles.

3. Turtles

Thonga Beach Lodge is proud of its privileged position in protecting the Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles and their nesting sites stretch along the shores right at the lodge and beyond.

Scuba, Snorkelling and Turtles

Scuba diving at Thonga Beach is phenomenal, with reefs located a short distance from the lodge. Shoals of game fish, sharks and schools of bottlenose dolphins are often seen. Our professional lodge diving team accommodates all enthusiasts; from the beginner to the veteran, wanting a tour of the very best our reefs have to offer. 1,250 fish species (Great Barrier Reef has 1500) occur on the reefs in this area. Dives are from a semi-rigid dive boat which accommodates a maximum of eight divers at a time. The boat launches from straight in front of the lodge directly through the surf. This can be exciting and strenuous so a reasonable level of fitness is required. Diving is limited by weather and the tides and cannot be guaranteed. Guests must have proof of their diving qualifications. We regret no children under twelve years or adults over sixty five years.

Mabibi is regarded as one of the best snorkelling sites in South Africa. The coral reefs along this protected stretch of coastline are home to thousands of species of tropical fish. Our Rockpool snorkelling area is home to mostly juvenile fish, but you can see octopus, fire fish, moray eels and electric rays too.

Seven species of marine turtles exist in the world’s oceans today, therefore turtles are important indicators of ocean health. There are five species found off the Kwa-Zulu Natal Coast, namely, the loggerhead, leatherback, hawksbill, green and olive ridley turtles. Of these five species that occur in South African waters, only the loggerhead and leatherback females nest along our shores.
